THE BUZZ: I heart this cast almost as much as I loved the book as a kid. In the hands of Jim Carrey and director Mark Waters, I think the contemporary retelling will translate. And a smart move on downsizing the original 12 penguins by half for the movie — no person or animal can take up Carrey’s frame! Did you know that Ben Stiller and Noah Baumbach almost teamed up for this project? But no one wanted to see a penguin have a vérité mid-life crisis.

THE BUZZ: Will Ferrell’s gone indie in the past (Stranger Than Fiction, Winter Passing, etc.) but never with a role that feels so vital. A Raymond Carver short story in the hands of a first-time writer-director gives us pause, sure, but we’re thinking the film might have more to do with Dan Rush’s future career than Ferrell’s. Besides, Notorious B.I.G.’s son co-stars alongside Rebecca Hall (suddenly, one of our favorite actresses), and Laura Dern shows up on the lawn for a bit, too.

One day, Charlie was assigned to personally escort a woman named Irene Waters to a prison in upstate New York. Then, a series of unfortunate events happen as both Charlie and Irene run into a group of corrupt cops and Irene’s abusive ex-boyfriend, in the middle of it all Charlie loses his medication and now fears that Hank will come out and makes the situation worse. While running, Charlie and Irene fall for each other (and so does Hank). Now, Both Charlie and Irene must stop the dirty cops, Irenes ex-boyfriend, and to stay one step ahead of Hank.

Bruce Almighty 2003

Bruce Nolan is a television reporter, who is currently assigned what he considers to be undignified assignments, that has him being the butt of a joke. When he is told that he is being considered for the position of anchorman, he goes out to do a live feed but when it is announced that Evan Baxter was going to be the new anchorman, and he freaks out. He gets fired, beaten up, and so on. In the end he blames God. God then decides to give Bruce his powers. Bruce then wreaks havoc and is enjoying it. He sabotages Evan and gets the job of anchorman. But when he realizes that he has to deal with what has got to be God’s most arduous task, listening and answering prayers. When he tries to grant everybody what they want, turmoil ensues. And while Bruce is getting everything he wants, he has been ignoring his girlfriend, Grace and loses her. And it seems that the only thing that he can’t do, is alter a person’s free will, so if he wants her back, he has to do it the hard way.

This is the story of a guy, Joel, who discovers that his long-time girlfriend, Clementine, has undergone a psychiatrist’s experimental procedure in which all of her memory of Joel is removed, after the couple has tried for years to get their relationship working fluidly. Frustrated by the idea of still being in love with a woman who doesn’t remember their time together, Joel agrees to undergo the procedure as well, to erase his memories of Clementine. The film, which takes place mostly within Joel’s mind, follows his memories of Clementine backwards in time as each recent memory is replaced, and the procedure then goes on to the previous one, which is likewise seen, and then erased. Once the process starts, however, Joel realizes he doesn’t really want to forget Clementine, so he starts smuggling her away into parts of his memory where she doesn’t belong which alters other things about his memories as well…
